Abstract

Background. In modern psychology, mindfulness is regarded as a multidimensional psychological phenomenon associated with the deliberate direction of attention to present-moment experience, an open, accepting, and non-judgmental attitude toward that experience, the development of self-regulation and psychological flexibility, and a reduction in automatic emotional and behavioral reactivity. Depending on the theoretical approach, mindfulness is conceptualized as a state, a process, or a capacity to engage consciously with internal and external experience. Growing scientific interest in mindfulness is associated with the expansion of research into its psychological mechanisms, its potential for integration into psychotherapeutic approaches, and its use in psychological practice.

Aim. To examine the theoretical foundations and practical application of mindfulness in psychology and to summarize the main approaches to its definition, models, mechanisms of action, foundational attitudes, and the specific features of its integration into psychotherapeutic approaches and various areas of psychological practice.

Methods. The study employed theoretical research methods, including analysis, synthesis, systematization, and generalization of information from the psychological literature on the research problem. On the basis of these theoretical methods, scientific works devoted to the conceptualization of mindfulness, its psychological mechanisms, formal and informal practices, psychotherapeutic approaches, and the outcomes of their application were reviewed and synthesized.

Results. The main approaches to defining mindfulness and the models in which it is characterized through attention regulation, orientation toward experience, the interaction of intention, attention, and attitude, as well as through the multidimensional structure of its psychological components, were examined. The foundational attitudes of mindfulness and its mechanisms of action were described, including reperceiving, self-regulation, values clarification, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral flexibility, and exposure. The specific features of integrating mindfulness into Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy were analyzed. Formal and informal mindfulness practices and their transfer into everyday life were characterized. The use of mindfulness in anxiety and depressive disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, addictive behavior, eating disorders, and other psychological difficulties was considered. Findings concerning its use in stress management, the development of psychological resilience and emotion regulation, interpersonal and professional contexts, as well as psychological work with adults, children, and adolescents, were summarized.

Conclusions. Mindfulness is widely used in modern psychology and psychotherapy, particularly in work with stress and various psychological difficulties. Mindfulness-oriented approaches and practices may contribute to maintaining psychological well-being, developing a more mindful attitude toward internal experience, and responding more flexibly to challenging life situations. The use of mindfulness is associated with the development of awareness, self-regulation, and psychological flexibility, as well as with reduced automatic reactivity. The practical significance of mindfulness lies in its potential to be integrated into various forms of psychological work and applied with consideration of age-related and individual psychological characteristics, as well as the individual’s current needs. Thus, mindfulness has broad potential for practical application and may contribute to the development of more mindful ways of engaging with internal experience and challenging life circumstances.
