Abstract

This article addresses the issue of patient anxiety in medical settings, which remains one of the major psychological barriers to effective doctor–patient communication, adherence to medical recommendations, and successful treatment outcomes. The authors substantiate the significance of physician empathy as a psychological resource capable of reducing patient anxiety during medical interaction. A theoretical analysis of recent Ukrainian and international research highlights the relevance of studying medical professionals’ empathy in the context of patient psychological support, especially under stressful, crisis, or uncertain conditions. The article presents findings from an empirical study involving adult patients and practicing physicians. Anxiety levels were assessed using the Spielberger–Hanin Anxiety Inventory, while physician empathy was evaluated through modified questionnaires. The study revealed that a high level of physician empathy is significantly correlated with lower levels of both state and trait anxiety in patients. Based on the findings, practical recommendations are provided for developing empathetic skills among physicians to improve the quality of medical care and patients’ psychological well-being. The results can be applied in postgraduate medical education and in designing hospital-based psycho-emotional support programs.
