Abstract

The article provides a theoretical analysis of the phenomena of anxious attachment and trauma bonding within the context of digitally mediated romantic relationships. Contemporary digital environments, including social media platforms, messengers, and asynchronous communication systems, create new conditions for the development of emotional dependency by intensifying mechanisms of attachment, emotional dysregulation, and behavioral reinforcement. Despite the significant growth of research in attachment theory, trauma psychology, and cyberpsychology, contemporary scientific literature still demonstrates considerable conceptual ambiguity regarding the distinction between anxious attachment and trauma bonding, which are frequently and incorrectly used as interchangeable constructs.

The aim of the article is to differentiate the psychological mechanisms underlying anxious attachment and trauma bonding in the context of digital romantic interaction and to develop an integrative theoretical model of emotional dependency in digitally mediated relationships. The study employs an interdisciplinary approach integrating concepts from attachment theory, trauma theory, the neuropsychology of addiction, behavioral reinforcement theory, and contemporary research on digital communication.

It is argued that anxious attachment is primarily grounded in the hyperactivation of the attachment system and fear of abandonment, whereas trauma bonding is maintained through cycles of unpredictable emotional reinforcement, alternation between intimacy and emotional deprivation, and mechanisms resembling addictive conditioning. Particular attention is paid to the role of intermittent reinforcement, digital partner accessibility, delayed responsiveness, selective communication, and algorithmically amplified monitoring of social activity in the formation of compulsive attachment-related behaviors. It is demonstrated that digital platforms create conditions of constant partial availability of a partner, thereby intensifying emotional hypervigilance, rumination, compulsive message-checking behavior, and dependency on social validation.

The article proposes a differential model of emotional dependency conceptualized as a continuum ranging from attachment anxiety to trauma bonding through mechanisms of emotional dysregulation, neuropsychological sensitization, and intermittent reinforcement. The practical significance of the study lies in its potential contribution to the improvement of psychotherapeutic approaches aimed at addressing emotional dependency, digital fixation on romantic partners, and the consequences of toxic relational dynamics in contemporary digital environments. Future research perspectives include the empirical validation of the proposed model and the investigation of neuropsychological and behavioral correlates of digitally mediated emotional dependency.
