Abstract

The modern processes taking place in society largely affect an individual’s mental, social and psychological development. Society is a living organism consisting of other social systems (communities, groups, associations). The purpose of this article is to build a systemic model for an individual’s social status that includes various aspects of the studied concept and its substantive characteristics. The article examines an individual’s social status as a systemic model, analyzes the approaches to interpretation of its substantive characteristics. Basing on the systematized theoretical review, we have identified two main groups of factors affecting an individual’s position in interpersonal relationships: internal factors (appearance, style, gender, age, business qualities, abilities, skills, values, attitudes to life, interests, etc.) and external factors (features of his/her team, such as its size, structure, common values of its members, developmental level, cohesion, etc.). We have expanded this classification by five blocks of the factors important for the determination of an individual’s social status in a small group: mental, social, psychological, socio-psychological, and personal. These blocks include social conditions and processes, social norms and values; the levels of culture, mentality, education; group structure, types and forms; interpersonal interactions;  an individual’s personal traits, temperament, intelligence, creative thinking, emotions, abilities, physiological and mental characteristics, motives, attitudes, needs;  an individual’s self-esteem, self-concept, ability to reflect, communication skills, consciousness. The main components that reflect social status acquiring by an individual are: personal characteristics, group processes, and social conditions. An individual’s social status as a systemic phenomenon is characterized by the following properties: abstractness, plurality, integrity, non-aditivity, hierarchy, interdependence, reliability. A model of social status acquiring by an individual via interactions with their social environment is proposed.
