Abstract

The article purpose is to study the role of a person’s psychological defence mechanisms and emotional stability as individual factors of resistance to changes. The article emphasizes the psychological issues of the phenomenon of resistance to changes. It presents the results of the performed empirical study revealing relations between the psychological defense mechanisms, the emotional stability components and the components of resistance to changes. The study findings include several personal psychological factors associated with the appearance of resistance to changes. These factors are: extraversion (an emotional stability component) and the following psychological defense mechanisms: regression, displacement, compensation, rationalization. The relations between the affective and behavioral components of resistance to changes and the determined individual psychological factors are analyzed. The total strength of weak, yet significant parameters is found to account for the determined relations. The study respondents were reluctant to change their opinions or attitudes, expressing imperceptiveness to novelty. A change-induced stress response activates the following psychological defense mechanisms: regression, displacement, compensation. Individuals with extravert characteristics are not routine seekers, thus they have lower likelihood to have developed resistance to changes. At future research, we should consider the impact of the mentioned factors to deepen our understanding on the complex nature of resistance to changes and find ways incorporating individual psychological factors to the development and implementation of measures aimed at individuals’ adaptation and assimilation to a changing environment.
