Such individual support for children living outside the family environment is of particular importance because, despite attempts to find families for all orphans, more than 750 orphanages and residential care facilities still work in the country and up to 100,000 thousand children live at these institutions (but only 8% of these children are real orphans or children deprived of parental care). The family forms of upbringing (adoption, guardianship / foster care, foster families, family-type orphanage) often are not applied for children with disabilities, adolescents, siblings from large families. The aim of the proposed mentoring is to meet each child’s need for emotional support, help and protection by a significant, respected person, a friend.

The conceptual and methodological foundations of mentoring for orphans in Ukraine are analyzed in the article. In particular, the terms of “mentoring”, “a mentor” are discussed; the importance of mentoring for socialization of orphans and children deprived of parental care is defined.

In addition, the article presents the methodology of mentoring in Ukraine. Thus, the social and psychological work for mentoring preparation includes two methodological directions: 1) preparation of orphans and children deprived of parental care for participation in the Mentoring Program; 2) social and psychological work with citizens who have a desire to become mentors. Based to the results of the methodology tested during implementation of the “One Hope” Mentoring Project in the city of Kyiv and Kyiv region in 2009-2017, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved resolution No. 465 “Some issues of mentoring for children” on July 4, 2017. This resolution regulates the mechanism of organization and implementation of mentoring for children living at orphanages and residential care facilities. The article describes the psychological and pedagogical method, preparing citizens and children for mentoring.

}, number={12}, journal={PSYCHOLOGICAL JOURNAL}, author={Udovenko, Yulia}, year={2019}, month={Dec.}, pages={263–279} }
