The significance of religious beliefs for Ukrainians, ranging from paganism to the present day, has been clarified. It is determined that Christianity interrupted a peculiar process of the formation of Ukrainian culture. For a long time, the embryos of cosmogony and cosmological ideas in views of man, the soul, were preserved; dualism was characteristic. Faith guides a person both intellectually and morally. Religious ideas are refracted through the subjective psychological properties of the personality of the believer.

In unity with God, a man becomes god-incarnated and finds himself, his moral ideal. A variety of religious experiences, feelings affect not only the individual, but also society as a whole. Religion was the life-giving source of a person’s life, because his life structure was imbued with the kindness and caress of the Almighty. From generation to generation, these initiates, saints and such necessary knowledge about spirituality were transmitted.

Specific features of religious experiences during the famine of 1932-33 in Ukraine and their consequences for the Ukrainian people are clarified. Man did not receive feedback from limited spiritual communion with God, and the long-standing inner confrontation between the sacred and imposed from the outside: hopelessness, voidness of life, fear of death - undermined the spiritual basis of man. They began to steal, kill, inform, rape, not paying attention to religion, ritual traditions, etc., which led to a violation of the basic spiritual laws and principles for the development of a person’s life, the content of their own existence. It was established that as a result of the destructive influence of atheism, the religious experience of a person lost internal (sacral), and received external signs: superficiality, limitation, pretentiousness.

Analyzed the importance of religious experiences, beliefs for modern youth. A significant number of believers have external religiosity. This indicates an unformed personality, infantilism, dependence on others. The church should participate in the spiritual growth of each individual and transform external religiousness into internal, which testifies to the self-sufficiency, integrity, self-actualization, autonomy of the individual.

}, number={1}, journal={PSYCHOLOGICAL JOURNAL}, author={Maslyuk, Andrii and Yevchenko, Iryna}, year={2019}, month={Feb.}, pages={120–135} }
